Wildlife photos from the Delaney WMA, Stow MA

Otter on the Move

These three river otter have just emerged from the water. Otter will haul out along a stream bank or at the edge of a wetlands, sometimes taking an overland shortcut to their next fishing hole.

Otter travel together, and this family will hunt together for frogs, mussels, and fish at Delaney before moving to a new location.

I was driving home from work on Rte 117 on Tuesday at 5:00 pm, just beyond Stow, and saw two River Otters were running down the road, one on each side, just over the white line/shoulder/breakdown lane headed back toward Stow about a 1/4 mile just before the old Skinner Auction Building and Slaters. They had two lanes of cars between them, so I hope they didn’t try to cross, as that’s such a busy stretch of roadway. I hope they made it safely home, assuming they live at Delany. They were really cute, small, and dark in color. I knew they were Otters right away.
